ASHBY

The East Greenwich Portland Cement Works was owned by George Crowley Ashby who had moved from Isleworth where his father William Ashbym a banker based in Staines, had a Roman cement works in 1840s, Ashby had been born 1788. He was a Quaker. He was said to be very fat. The family also had a warehouse in Upper Thames Street, ‘City of London.
